Have you ever heard of a Juicy Lucy? You can find them at multiple burger joints across the Midwest. Did you know it actually started at a small bar in Minnesota? The same bar, that's been around since the 1950s has recently been named one of the cheapest restaurants in the United States.

Cheapism put together a list of the best cheapest restaurants in every state. Naturally, I had to dig in and find out more about this Minnesota landmark. Especially when it seems that a modest lunch anywhere these days costs at least $15 (if you're lucky.)

Matt's Bar - Minneapolis, MN

Matt's Bar, located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has earned the title of the best budget-friendly restaurant in the state. However, don't let the term "budget-friendly" mislead you; it's a term of praise in this instance.

The Jucy Lucy (Correctly Spelled Without an I)

Matt's Bar started as a burger joint in 1954, over 70 years ago! According to the history on their website, owner Matt Bristol created the Jucy Lucy. It was created when a customer asked for two burgers with a slice of cheese in between them. When he bit into it, he said, "Wow! That's one Juicy Lucy!"

According to reports, the demand for the iconic burger surged so rapidly that the creators overlooked adding the letter I to the word 'Juicy,' resulting in the burger being famously known as the Jucy Lucy to this day. (With a spelling error.)

According to popular belief, if you find a Juicy Lucy correctly spelled on a restaurant menu, it indicates that you're enjoying a counterfeit version of the burger rather than the authentic dish.

What are the prices like at Matt's Bar?

At Matt's Bar, you can snag a Jucy Lucy for just $10.25. If you're looking for something more budget-friendly, a regular hamburger is priced at $4.75, while a cheeseburger will set you back $5.25. These prices are quite reasonable considering today's standards!

Matt's Bar has been covered by the media many times over the years, and recently was featured on Pawn Stars Do America. Check out the episode on History Channel to see what the gang had to say about the Jucy Lucy!
