A woman in her early 70s in the United Kingdom was admitted to the hospital due to severe heatstroke after an extended sauna session. According to a Live Science report on January 9, the woman had been in the sauna for approximately 45 minutes before she unexpectedly lost consciousness.
As per the report, paramedics promptly arrived at the scene and noted that the woman's core body temperature had risen to 107.6 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about nine degrees Fahrenheit above the average range.
The woman's blood pressure had dropped, while her heart rate had increased.
A woman has been diagnosed with a serious case of exertional heat stroke.
Upon her hospitalization, the woman was diagnosed with a critical case of exertional heat stroke, a serious condition that can lead to multi-organ failure and death if not recognized and treated promptly.
According to the report, the woman experienced several health complications, including a seizure, heart attack, liver and kidney damage, as well as issues with blood clotting.
An hour after being admitted to the hospital, the woman's body temperature normalized, and she regained consciousness two hours later.
She fully recovered without the need for advanced organ support and was discharged from the hospital after a 12-day stay.
An unusual occurrence
This case involving a UK woman is unusual, as fewer than 10 individuals globally have reported suffering from heat stroke after using a sauna.
The woman was described as "physically active" and was noted for not smoking or consuming alcohol "in large amounts."
It is likely that the woman became dehydrated while in the sauna, as she mentioned that she had not consumed sufficient water prior to the incident.
