Dr. Punam Krishan, a regular on BBC's Morning Live and an NHS GP, has opened up about her remarkable journey on Strictly Come Dancing, describing it as the pinnacle of her health and fitness endeavors. "It's unequivocally the best fitness journey I've ever embarked on," she shared.

Initially apprehensive, she soon found the intense physical regimen and dance routines to be revitalizing, leading to improved muscle definition and vigor. "Additionally, there's a significant mental health aspect—dancing instills a sense of mental well-being that brings joy. I am convinced that this has been the most beneficial decision for my health and fitness in my lifetime."

Her family, including her 11-year-old son Aarish and four-year-old daughter Ellora, were thrilled by her participation. Dr. Krishan revealed her son's dream of seeing her on the show, which added depth to her experience.

"My son and I have always enjoyed watching Strictly. He would say, 'I can see you doing that one day, mum,' and I would laugh at his excitement. But the joy on his face when I told him I was joining Strictly was extraordinary. It felt like our family was on this adventure together, and they treasured every moment."

At 41, Dr. Krishan was the fifth to leave the competition in late October, but she was thrilled for blind comedian Chris McCausland's victory. "I developed a strong bond with Chris on Strictly," she shared.

"He's an incredibly genuine person, a truly wonderful man. His dance performances have inspired many to understand that with determination, anything is possible and nothing is unattainable. I'm genuinely delighted; he truly deserved to win."

Dr. Krishan, married to Scottish Conservative MSP Sandesh Gulhane, has leveraged her Strictly experience to enhance her fitness. In addition to the Couch to 5k challenge, she also engages in weekly jazz heels dance classes. "This has been the motivation I needed," she noted. "As a full-time GP and mother of two, I've often used my limited time as an excuse to avoid exercising."

"I was initially nervous and unsure, but the training was incredibly demanding, and the dancing was exhilarating. I'm in better shape now than ever before, and I have more energy as a result."

Being energetic, participating in Strictly has truly motivated her. It has instilled a desire to stay active, significantly boosting her self-esteem. She has noticed an increase in vitality and is now intentionally making time for exercise, realizing her capacity to do so.

She points out the compelling evidence that any form of physical activity can positively affect mental health. "In today's busy world, our packed schedules are a constant demand on our attention. We're always alert, and the accumulation of small stressors can lead to stress, anxiety, and feeling overwhelmed, potentially leading to burnout."

She stresses that physical activity is vital for countering the cortisol produced by everyday stress. Besides dancing and running, Krishan enjoys long walks with her dog while listening to inspiring podcasts. She is a staunch advocate for mental health, stating, "I truly believe that safeguarding your mental well-being is the most important thing you can do; when that's stable, everything else falls into place. Your choices stem from a place of positive mental health, and achieving that isn't simple. It's a challenge we all need to tackle
