ERLANGEN, Germany — In 2021, German researchers announced a significant achievement. They had induced remission in a young woman with severe lupus, a condition causing her organs to fail, using a novel treatment.
Like other autoimmune disorders where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body, lupus is a chronic condition that doesn't simply disappear. For patients, the most hopeful strategy is to manage symptoms with ongoing medication. However, this 20-year-old experienced a remarkable recovery; her disease seemed to vanish completely, allowing her to stop other treatments.
This was just a single case report, and the team was not widely recognized in the global lupus research community. The paper did not receive much attention.
